Our crab apples are getting quite autumnal. These ones (can't remember their exact name) were the favourite crab apples of the famous Australian landscape gardener/architect Edna Walling. I've just had a look on Wikipedia for some information on the dear lady. Her early years were spent in Devon and when she was 14, she and her family emigrated to New Zealand. Three years later, they moved to Australia. After studying horticulture at Burnley College and some years as a jobbing gardener, she began her own landscape design practice in the 1920's.
Interestingly, the article goes on to say, amongst other things, that she had a hand in the design of beautiful Cruden Farm, home of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch (Rupert's ma).
